Backgrounds are served via /api/dnd/backgrounds (proxy) or /api/mcp/sources (MCP). The empty body suggests the reporter didn’t load a character or inspect the network tab. Likely causes:

  • Frontend component (CharacterSheet/BackgroundSection.tsx) not mounted or hidden
  • API route /api/characters/{id}/background returns empty/null due to:
    • Missing background field in character document
    • MCP fallback disabled (MCP_FALLBACK_TO_DIRECT=false) and MCP service down
    • Character created before backgrounds were added to schema

Possible fix

  1. Verify data flow: Check /api/characters/{id} returns background field
  2. Check MCP: GET /api/mcp/status → ensure healthy=true
  3. Inspect frontend: Confirm CharacterSheet renders <BackgroundSection />
  4. Schema migration: If character documents predate backgrounds, run a migration to populate background from backgroundId
